SEASON 2009/10

Under 9s: Wokingham & Emmbrook Blacks 2 - 2 Caversham Trent

Saturday 6th February 2010

This tough encounter saw the Blacks take on one of the leading teams in the Division 1.  Chances in the first half fell to both teams, but Trents showed their quality in finishing with 2 quality shots, whereas the Blacks found it difficult to find and decisive shot despite several well worked opportunities. Toby Deans’ handling in the Black’s goal much improved since the last outing was left little chance on both Trent’s goals.  Half-time:  Blacks 0, Trents 2.  The second half was a complete turnaround, and rather than letting their heads drop, the Blacks attacked with full intentions of taking a result away from the fixture.  Oli Farndon and Matthew Hales were determined not to let Trents settle into their play and forced the hand with Finley Stallwood breaking through to poke Blacks’ first goal home.  The pressure was kept on Trents’ defence until finally it cracked from the perfect Sam Mitchell corner met with force by Josh Smart cleanly on the head to power the second goal.  Michael Valdambrini and Ben Wallace doggedly kept the Trents strikers out with fine tackling and blocking to finish the game on top of this very entertaining fixture.  Final score: 2-2.  Man of the Match award went to Sam Mitchell.

Saturday 12th December 2009

W&EFC U9s Blacks 3 - 1 Meadway Youth

With no substitutes available the Blacks had to work hard to cover off the
first half pressure that Meadway presented.  Two strikes against the same
post by Josh Smart looked like goals again would be hard to come by and
the nerves started to fray when Meadway scored an excellent goal with a
super headed free-kick.  The second half picked up for the Blacks and
finally Josh Smart fired in a 15yard bullet.  Thye pressure built and
Oliver Frandon shot into the roof of the net with Sa Mitchell rounding off
a deserved win.  Man of the Match award went to Toby Deans who stood in
defence and didn't make a mistake throughout.  Final score Wokingham &
Emmbrook 3 - 1 Meadway Youth

Under 9s:  Wokingham & Emmbrook Blacks v Reading Rangers

Saturday 28th November 2009

A more solid performance by the Blacks this week ensured this was a very well competed, but very tough match. New positions for a couple of players helped strengthen the midfield and lead to much more passing around the field.  The chances were available to score, but it took a quality finish by Josh Smart to break down the Rangers’ defence.  Further opportunities were there, but good saves and tackling on Ben Wallace and Sam Mitchell kept Rangers in with a chance.  The equaliser came deep in the second half when a shot was deflected past Black’s keeper. Great competing my Michael Valdambrini and Toby Deans in defence is proving to be a great new partnership.  Matthew Hales, Travis Wright & Oli Farndon were given the task of pressing the Rangers defence.  Man of the Match was Finley Stallwood, who was outstanding in goal.

W&EFC U9s Blacks 0  v 6 Caversham Trent

Saturday 7th November 2009

The Blacks were left weakened this week by sickness and “school duty” which meant that several players had to change position and cover for absentees.  With no regular goalkeeper available, Edward Bradley followed by Matthew Hales took responsibility between the posts, but Trent’s striking power proved too much with 3 goals either side of half time.  Sam Mitchell and Michael Valdambrini worked hard to cover the gaps, with Travis Wright taking on the sole responsibility of striker throughout the match.  Ben Wallace, back from injury, worked very hard as usual.  Man of the Match award went to Oliver Farndon who without any questioning took his position in defence well and put in a number of excellent tackles.

W&EFC Under 9s Blacks v Westwood Wanderers

Saturday 17th October 2009 BYDL

Some of the team’s best football still couldn’t get them back on to winning ways against Westwood.  The first half was very well competed, with neither team having too many clear cut chances: Josh Smart had one opportunity well saved and Matthew Hales went close with a long range effort.  The second half was a little more open, with Westwood eventually taking the lead after sustained pressure in and around the W&E penalty area.  The game was put beyond reach with 5 minutes to go by an expertly taken turn and long range shot from Westwood’s striker.  Man of the match went to Finley Stallwood for his great efforts in goal and some great long distance clearances.  Final score: 0-2.

Saturday 10th October 2009

W&EFC Under 9s Blacks v Rotherfield Utd

A game of two halves!  Without any substitutes this week, the team had to concentrate very hard on their game and to work very hard!  The first half consisted of a very impressive performance with the team showing what they are capable of with maturity and patience.  Finley Stallwood, in goal, was not troubled except for a couple of clearances.  2 goals were scored by Sam Mitchell and Josh Smart.  The second half unfortunately fell back into a similar pattern previous matches where gaps were left in defence (regular defender Ben Wallace was missing, due to injury), and Rotherfield were able to break through on 4 occasions.  Final score 2-4!  Toby’s performance in defence in the first half was another step in the right direction.  One other great performance in the team was Matthew Hales, who passed and tackled well and held the ball well on several occasions.

Saturday 3rd October 2009

W&EFC U9s Blacks 0 - 3 Reeves Rangers

The hard ground and very blustery conditions meant this match was always going to be a challenge and seemed to often be changed by the “luck of the bounce”.  Unfortunately this seemed to be in Reeves’ favour today with a 3-0 victory.  Everyone put everything into their game, but we found once again that the team was not quite gelling as we know they can do.  Man of the Match award went to Josh, as is always the case, he puts his heart and soul into everything he does, covering most positions in the team from defence to attack.

Saturday 26th September 2009

U9s Orange V Maidenhead Boys & Girls

A lesson learnt this week as the team learnt how not to defend in the penalty area.  3-0 down by half-time unfortunately was not against the run of play, with Toby handling well most of the 20 minutes.  The second half was shored up somewhat with a better performance, but a 4th goal ended an unusually poor team performance.  Man-of-the-match award went to Toby, without whom the score could have been worse, and a solid presence in the 2nd half defence.

19th September2009

W&EFC v  Woodley Saints Tigers

Another well fought contest, with the half-time scoreline at 1-1, the result could have gone either way.  Final score was 2-2, with Sam and Josh scoring once each.  This season is going to be a very tough one to call!  Man of the Match: Michael Valdambrini – Mr Consistency, always a first on the team sheet.

12th September 2009

W&EFC v Reading Rangers:

A very exciting and well fought match between two very closely matched sides.  All players from both teams played very well, with W & E closing at a 4-3 victory.  Travis Wright scored his first hat-trick of his career and Josh added a single goal.  Man of the Match: Sam Mitchell – never has he covered so much ground, made so many tackles and contributed to so many attacks.

Saturday 6th March 2010

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Duncan, Kaithan, Edward, Owen, Connor,
Brandon, Fabien and Toby.

The boys did us proud today with great performances all round in both
matches.

So a big well done to the all of the boys !

W&EFC Oranges 2 AFC Whitchurch 4

We gave high flying Whitchurch a close call. Late on with the score at
2-3, we had a shot cleared off the line and the follow up shot from
Fabien hit the bar. Whitchurch then cleared the ball quickly and scored
on the break :-(

The quality of the Oranges passing and attacking play was superb. With
the goals being shared between Toby and Edward.

The man-of-the-match was a close call but Owen got the nod for a great
contribution in defence.

Saturday 6th February 2010

W&EFC Oranges 4 Spencers Wood 2

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Kaithan, Owen, Connor, Brandon,
Fabien and Toby.

The Oranges bossed the 1st half and took their chances well to lead 3-0
at the break. This was good after the long lay-off.

Spencers Wood came back strongly in the 2nd half and pulled back to 3-2.
The Oranges dug deep and scored again to close out the match.

The goals were shared - 2 each for Fabien and Toby. A special mention
here for Toby, who showed us some superb running with the ball.

The most pleasing part of the display was how solid we were at the back.
Kaithan especially threw his body in the way for  a couple of great blocks.

The defence were helped out by all of the midfield tracking back. The
star here was Fabien, who ran up and down the whole match.

Finally, the effort award was given to Fabien for a great all round
performance (goals and effort). Fabien also brought along a "Go Oranges"
poster that he made for the team. Excellent team spirit and well done to Fabien!

Saturday 12th November 2009

W&EFC Oranges 1 Kennet Valley 4

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Duncan, Kaithan, Owen, Edward,
Ethan, Brandon, Fabien and Toby.

The Oranges battled well and equalised early in the 2nd half, after
being 1-0 down at half time. Well done to Ethan for battling in the box
to force the ball into the net.

After that though, as the Oranges got tired, Kennet Valley took control.

There were quite a few positives though.

Curtess was goalkeeper in the 1st half and Kaithan was goalkeeper in the
2nd half. Both played really well.

The midfield is starting to gel and there were some good passing movements.

Fabien worked tremendously hard in midfield to get back and tackle.

The defence were all putting in some fierce tackles. This is old news
for Max and Kaithan but Duncan is getting into it more and more.

Finally, the effort award was given to Brandon. Brandon was striker in
the 1st half and gave it a real go. At one point, Brandon was so close
to scoring several times in a goal mouth scramble. In the 2nd half,
Brandon dropped back into midfield and worked really hard. Well done
Brandon !

Saturday 28th November 2009

W&EFC Oranges 3 Hurst Romans 3

On a bitterly cold day, the Oranges and Romans had a real ding dong
match. With a draw being a fair result.

Both teams had chances saved by the keeper and cleared off the line, so
it could have gone either way.

The Oranges came back from 0-1 and 1-2 to lead 3-2 but couldn't quite
hold on.

Lots to enjoy in the Oranges performance, with the goals being shared
amongst Fabien, Kaithan and Toby.

Finally, the effort award was given to Owen, who gave it a real go in
the 2nd half. Owen comes along to virtually every training session and
match, never complains and is improving week by week. Keep up the hard
work Owen. Well done !

W&EFC Oranges 1 AFC Whitchurch 5

Saturday 21st November 2009

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Duncan, Kaithan, Owen, Connor,
Brandon, Fabien and Toby.

The Oranges played well in the 1st half and didn't give much away, but
were 2-0 down to a classy Whitchurch team.

During the half-time team talk, the Oranges agreed to go all out for a
goal if Whitchurch went 3-0 up.

About half way through the 2nd half, Whitchurch scored a 3rd goal and
the Oranges went on the attack.

W&EFC were quickly rewarded with a great finish from Fabien (thanks to
Toby for the assist).

Curtess kept the score down as Whitchurch counter-attacked. This
included one great double save when 3 Whitchurch forwards broke through
on goal.

However, Whitchurch managed to grab a couple more goals on the break.

The Oranges came off with heads held high as they had given it their
best shot and kept going until the final whistle.

Finally, the effort award was given to Fabien, who had his best game
ever for the Oranges. This was capped by scoring a goal, but the
highlight was the running, tackling and commitment that Fabien showed
throughout the match. Fabien claims it was all down to his matchday
breakfast of cheese-on-toast and Ribena :-) Well done Fabien ! Let's see
more of this next match.

Saturday 7th November 2009

W&EFC Oranges 2 Woodley Saints Pumas 2

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Kaithan, Owen, Connor, Brandon,
Fabien and Toby.

A great fight back from the Oranges after going 2-0 down in the 1st half.

The Oranges attacked from start to finish and were unlucky to get caught
on the break for the 1st goal. The 2nd goal from the Pumas was a really
well worked corner - so well done to them.

The Oranges never let their heads drop and got 1 goal back before half
time. The 2nd half was all Oranges but we had to wait until the last
kick of the match for the equaliser.

Toby scored both goals but I lost count of the number of shots that the
Oranges had.

Fabien had a good game as the lone striker and had a few shots on goal,
plus Fabien linked up well with Toby throughout the match.

Finally, the effort award was given to Kaithan for an awesome game in
defence. Kaithan tackled and covered superbly. Kaithan also nearly
scored from a free-kick in the 1st half. Well done Kaithan !

Saturday 17th October 2009

W&EFC Oranges 3 Rotherfield Raptors 3

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Kaithan, Owen, Connor, Edward,
Fabien and Toby.

Another great team performance from the Oranges, who were again unlucky
not to get all the points. The Oranges took the lead 3 times and were
pegged back each time.

The goals were shared between Toby (2) and Edward. But all of the
midfielders/forwards had chances to add to our 3 goals.

The Oranges played some good football going forwards, with plenty of
good passing and movement.

One area that we need to work on is for the midfielders to get back and
defend, once an attack has broken down.

Kaithan had an excellent game in defence, which is even better because
he really wanted to play in midfield. Well done Kaithan !

Finally, the effort award was given to Connor for a great midfield
performance. Connor had a assist in the 1st goal (10/10 for a good
through ball) and was full of running from start to finish. Well done
Connor !

Saturday 10th October 2009

W&EFC Oranges 1 Spencers Wood 1

The full Oranges squad turned out: Curtess, Max, Owen, Connor, Kaithan,
Duncan, Edward, Fabien, Ethan, Brandon and Toby.

The quote of the day was made by the Spencers Wood Coach - who compared
the Oranges to Holland - "Orange strip, lots of fair hair and good
football!"

Well done to the whole squad for the draw and another point ! However,
the Oranges were the better team and deserved all the points. So there
might be a bit of disappointment around.

Again, the Oranges played well in the 1st half and were good value for
their 1-0 half-time lead. Toby scoring with a snap shot from the edge of
the box - after an assist from Connor, who was on top form.

The Oranges had enough chances to put the match away (including missing
a penalty). But Spencers Wood snatched an equaliser in the 2nd half.

Curtess played well in goal despite the slippery conditions. Curtess
found it hard to take the ball cleanly, but he always grabbed the ball
2nd time and never gave Spencers Wood an easy chance.

The outfield players coped with the many substitutions and were always
in the game, whichever combination was on.

Finally, the effort award was given to Max for an awesome defensive
performance. As Max said to me after the game, "we were leading when I
came off". Great attitude and well done Max !

Saturday 3rd October 2009

W&EFC U9 Oranges 1 Dynamos 0

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Owen, Kaithan, Duncan, Edward,
Fabien and Toby.

Well done to the whole team for a great win !

The Oranges played well in the 1st half and had chances to be more than
1-0 up at the break. Toby scoring another well-taken goal.

The 2nd half was a real nailbiter. There were very few chances in a
really competitive half.

The Oranges competed, scrapped and battled right until the end. This was
essential against a physical Dynamos team.

The highlight was the "defence". Well done to Curtess, Max, Duncan and
Kaithan for a clean sheet.

The return of Fabien and Edward gave the team more options in attack.
This allowed the midfield (Owen, Kaithan and Toby) to play better.

Finally, the effort award was given to Duncan for a great defensive
performance. Duncan had his best game ever for the Oranges. Well done
Duncan !

Saturday 26th September 2009

W&EFC Oranges 0 Whiteknights FC 3

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Brandon, Connor, Kaithan, Duncan,
Ethan and Toby.

The Oranges competed well in a goalless 1st half and it was all to play
for in the 2nd half.

However, Whiteknights were the better team in the 2nd half and deserved
the win although the score of 3-0 flatters them.

The first 2 goals had an element of bad luck for the Oranges - Curtess
got injured in the build up to the 1st goal. The 2nd goal was an
unfortunate own goal :-(

At this point, the Oranges went all out to get a goal. This is where the
Oranges really missed the 2 absent strikers - Fabien and Edward - come
back soon!

Plus points were Toby's all round play and Kaithan's usual determined
performance in midfield.

The effort award was given to Curtess for another great goalkeeping
performance. Curtess has come back after the summer break with improved
technique in all areas of his keeping. His shot stopping now is amazing.
Well done Curtess !

19 September 2009
W&EFC Oranges 1 Burghfield Blue 2

The Orange team was: Curtess, Max, Brandon, Connor, Kaithan, Fabien,
Owen and new boy Toby.

The Oranges started slowly but woke up when they took the lead against
the run of play - thanks to a well taken goal by Fabien.

The Oranges started to play well and created lots of chances to extend
their lead.

However, Burghfield equalised before half time, which set the scene for
an exciting second half.

Early in the 2nd half, Owen had to come off injured "again" with a
bleeding knee.

After that the 2nd half was end to end with both teams trying hard to
score more goals.

Curtess shone again with a fantastic save to keep the Oranges in the
game. There was also one incident where Curtess came out of his area and
managed to keep his hands off the ball in the melee - phew !

However, it was Burghfield who took the lead midway through the 2nd half.

The boys did not let their heads drop and tried really hard to get an
equaliser - so well done to everybody.

The effort award was given to Toby for a great attacking performance
from midfield. Toby is going to create and score loads of goals for the
Oranges this season. Well done Toby !

12TH SEPTEMBER 2009

W&EFC Oranges 0 Westwood Wanderers 2

After a couple of friendlies - the 1st match of the season finally arrived.

The Oranges team was: Curtess, Max, Duncan, Connor, Edward, Fabien, Owen
and new boy Ethan.

Westwood had the best of the 1st half and were 2-0 up at half time.
Curtess was the star of the 1st half - with the highlight being a great
save from a free kick.

Steve's half time team talk did the trick though and the Oranges were a
completely different team in the 2nd half.

In the 2nd half, the Oranges tried hard until the final whistle,
pressurised the Wanderers and created chances to score. The Oranges were
also much more solid at the back.

The whole team played well so well done to everybody.

The only worrying moment was when Owen got hit in the face by the ball
when he was blocking a cross. We were all relieved when Owen's nose
stopped bleeding and he had recovered enough to shake hands with the
opposition at the end. Owen was even joking about being the new Kaithan  :-)

The effort award was given to Ethan for a superb midfield performance.
Ethan was all over the pitch - tackling, chasing and making life
difficult for the Wanderers. Well done Ethan !
