 SEASON 2009/10

MATCH REPORTS

Under 12s East Berks League: Wokingham & Emmbrook  1 - 0 Ascot Utd Panthers

Saturday 6th February 2010

This bottom of the table “6 pointer” was always going to be tough as both teams were determined to collect points to kick-off the second half of the season as they intended to go on.  Panthers made all of the play in the first 15 minutes, with the ball rarely venturing out of the W&E half, but defenders Joe Carter, Callum Hales, Ian Patterson and Dan Hutchins ensured they were crowding out the Panthers’ strikers making them unable to find any clear opportunity to take the lead.  Defending became deeper and deeper until the midfield combination of Jordon Greenough and Ross Bee finally managed to feed through to Raven Sehejpal who coolly took his chance and slotted the ball home to take the lead.  Apart from a couple of Ben Claridge corners, further opportunities were hard to come by for the Blacks, with Panthers’ greater size advantage proving decisive.  Half Time: Blacks 1, Panthers 0.  The second half was a continuation of the first with Panthers taking most of the possession.  Will Mollett and Dan Johns carved a couple of openings for the Blacks, but without taking the final decisive strike.  Good work by Alex Bourne and Ryan Smith produced a Blacks penalty but when this was missed the pressure was put back on their goal, but with Ben Lewis being assured with a safe pair of hands, the Panthers could not grab a late equaliser.  Final score: 1-0.  Man of the Match: Dan Hutchins.

Winnersh Rangers u12s 5 – 2 Wokingham & Emmbrook Under 11s

This was a very well-matched contest, where a heavy, sticky pitch made it
a very tough and draining match for both teams, preventing the skills that
are usually evident.  Goals were traded through the 60 minutes with
periods where both teams looked comfortable and having the ability to go
on to win.  Rangers however took control with 2 goals in the first half,
with a later response by Dan Hutchins for the Blacks.  Scores appeared to
be levelled by Daniel Johns, only for his strike to be ruled off-side.
The second half continued to be battled and the Blacks appeared to be
taking control with a second goal by Dan Hutchins, however with energy
sapping Rangers managed to finish off with 3 goals towards the end.  Man
of the match for the Blacks went to Jordon Greenough for continuous hard
work throughout.  Final score Rangers 5 - 2 Wokingham & Emmbrook 11s

Under 11s:  Wokingham & Emmbrook v Burghfield FC

Saturday 28th November 2009

A dominant performance in the first half seemed to provide everything except a goal, with Burghfield also having their chances - quality defending by Callum Hales, Joe Carter and Ben Claridge kept the sheet clear.  The second half opened up with excellent team work and accurate passing that W&E have been working on all season.  Finally a breakthrough was provided by a Burghfield own goal, giving W&E a present they were able to add to mid-way in the second half by a spectacular goal by the very accomplished Dan Hutchins.   A drop in concentration allowed a consolation for the home team however with Jordon Greenough proving again that he is a class act in this team, ably supported by Ryan Smith and Raven Sehejpal, this was not going to take away the sense of achievement this team have worked so hard for.  Man of the Match was Ben Lewis for a fine display in goal.

W&EFC U11s v South Reading

Saturday 25th October 2009

A well fought contest between these two teams with most of the play taking place in the middle of the pitch.  South Reading however proved their better goal-scoring ability in both halves by scoring 3 times in each period.  W&E battled hard and deserved more from the game, but unfortunately ran out of energy as they pushed forward to take some consolation.  Man of the Match award went to Jordon Greenough for his 100% effort throughout.

W&EFC Under 11s v Arborfield Apaches (Cup Game) EBYFL

Wokingham & Emmbrook’s cup run came to a halt in this second round match to 4th division Apaches (one league higher than W&E).  The tactics were to keep Apaches out and the lines of defence presented were sound until two very unfortunate own-goals in the last 5 minutes of the first half.  More positive play in the second half presented a much more even look to the match, with exceptional play through midfield from Jordon Greenough and dogged determination from Callum Hales, Joe Carter, Ian Patterson and Ben Claridge in defence to stop Apaches breaking through again until the last second of the match.  Final score: 0-3.

Saturday 10th October 2009

W&EFC Under 11s v Lyne Pumas

Pumas had joined the league on the back of consistent wins, and were a tough challenge for W&E’s young team.  Their size and experience in 11-a-side showed throughout, with a number of goals being scored through the 60 minutes.  This is very much a learning curve for this W&E team who are still trying to establish themselves in a division of players all of whom are a year older and more experienced.  Special mention goes to Ian Patterson for some excellent defending, brave challenges and who therefore received the man-of-the-match award.

Saturday 3rd October 2009

W&EFC U11s 4 – 2  West Byfleet (1st round, Cup Match)

A moment in history!  The under 11s won their first 11-a-side match today with a resounding 4-2 score line.  The first half was dominated, with Jordon finding the goal in the first minute, only for it to be disallowed for off-side.  No matter as a few minutes later, Daniel was involved in a goal-line scramble, poking the ball home to take a well-deserved lead.  Jordon then showed his full abilities with skilful play and two goals, including one long range effort.  Half time: 3-0.  The second half was much tighter and West Byfleet worked hard in scrambling a goal back, only to see the lead stretched back to 3 goals with a scrambled own-goal.  A free-kick on the edge of our penalty area was unstoppably taken, resulting in a 4-2 victory.  Next round will be a tougher affair against Arborfield Apaches.

Saturday 26th September 2009

U11s V Hearts of Teddlothian

A goal in the first few minutes, gave everyone heart that points were not far away.  Unfortunately this sprung Hearts into action and they piled on pressure for most of the remaining first session.  The second half saw Hearts miss a number of opportunities, but taking one further goal after a strong run down the right wing.  The score was brought back to 2-3, leading to us camping in the Hearts penalty area for the last 10 minutes of the game, unfortunately without further success.  William Mollett scored both W&E goals; Man-of-the Match went to Callum, for an increasingly solid performance in defence.

12th September 2009 versus Rushmore Saints Sports

A baptism of fire!  The scoreline should be forgotten as this was the first outing as an 11-a-side team for a full 60 minute match.  Numerous positives need to be taken from this match including great individual performances from Ross, and Daniel, a strong captaincy from Callum and boundless energy from Alex.  A spectacular left footed goal from Jordon lit up the second half.  Man of the Match:  Ryan Smith for giving his all throughout the match.

19th September 2009 versus Yateley Juniors Pumas

A great all-round performance from the team, where much better use of the space available was being utilised for the first time.  A few new positions were taken which added balance to the team, although no goals were scored by W&E.  Tiring legs at the end of the first half led to the first Pumas’ goal, but this didn’t stop us from battling on through the second period.  Final score was 5-0 but a much more positive team left the pitch, looking forward to more improvements next week.
