Last weekend (30th May) saw the stage at Emmbrook Sports & Social Club brimming with awards and presentation (and quite a lot of silverware!!) as the senior & youth sections of Wokingham & Emmbrook F.C. celebrated last season’s successes.
This year’s presentation saw a move from tradition, with the Senior awards presented on Saturday evening with the Youth awards presented during the following day. This gave the Senior players a chance to witness the size of the club with all the awards from under 7’s up to under 18’s on display. A nice touch to bring home to them all what a big club we are.
SENIOR REVIEW – GLENN DUGGLEBY
The evening started with presentations and season reviews for the two Saturday Reading League sides and the Sunday League side. Special mention should go here to Pat Selby from the ‘A’ team for his achievement of Golden Boot winner for the Reading League, i.e. top scorer in all divisions.
Then it moved onto the under 17 side who won their league and just missed out on a couple of cups, mainly due to the backlog of games at the end of the season. Many of this side were also involved in the Under 18s Allied counties squad, who were up next.
The story of the under 18s squad is a remarkable one. Having won the Allied Division One title the previous season under Nigel Bateman and Wayne Wanklyn, they stepped up to the challenging Premier Division this season, with survival as the target as many of the successful squad moved on as they had passed the age limit. They started well, then Nigel had to step down and his assistant Roger Herridge took over the manager's role, recruited Dan Bateman as his assistant and physio and added several of his young under 17’s to the squad. Things then just got better and better, ending in an amazing runners-up spot in the League, finishing closely behind a very impressive Hayes & Yeading side as well as being the only side to beat them along the way. This was achievement enough, however the under 18’s Berks & Bucks Cup was added with an impressive victory over Bracknell Town at Abingdon. The awards in U17s and Allied saw the impressive seasons of David Bellis, Shane Cooper Clark and Mark O'Connell recognised.
Finally the team presentations concluded with Wayne Wanklyn taking the stage to review and present awards to his successful young squad in Wayne ’s first full season in charge.
Wayne congratulated the players on a great season and thanked his staff Sam Page, Roger Herridge & Dan Bateman.
Clive McNelly received the Senior Clubman of the year award.
Reviewing the season for the First Team a very creditable 4th spot was achieved in Hellenic League Division One East, with the squad in close contention for promotion for most of the season. Wayne has worked with a close-knit squad of just over 20 players, supported by some promising young talent from Roger’s Allied squad. He commented on how he was looking forward to working with more of the young stars in his retained squad for next season as we go for his progression target of a top two finish and promotion. We said (a hopefully temporary) farewell to Alex Walton, Davis Bellis and Jack Broome and wished them well as they head off to University. Then as the Awards were about to be presented there was also the chance to reflect on the glorious night at the Madjeski Stadium when we won the Reading Senior Cup in an impressive 3 – 0 victory over new Hellenic side Woodley Town. The video presentation of that evening, put together by Graham Tabor, bought back many emotions from that memorable night.
As the curtain finally came down on a very successful season, thoughts are already moving on to prepare for next season’s assault on a variety of fronts, with the Management team all still in place for 2009/2010.
Youth Section Review - Neil van den Dungen
Neil van den Dungen chaired the Youth Section, supported by Dan Bateman Head of Youth Football and paid particular tribute to all those who give up their time to manage and coach the youth teams as well as the many volunteers who give up so much time to make the club the success it is including recent events the 6 a side festival and the Soccerfun sessions for children from 4 years old.
The Youth Clubman of the year Award was presented jointly to Billy & Debbie Griffiths.
The stand out successes were the U12 Girls who won their League, The U11 boys who won the Division 1 League Cup and the U13 team who were Runners -up in their League Cup and of course the U17 and Allied Teams .
The Club also recoginised players who have demonstrated their loyalty starting out at U7s to todays U17s with 10 year awards going to Jordan Watson, William Wilson, Mark O'connell & Jack Herridge.
The Youth section continues to grow and next season hope to run a 3rd girls team as well as new U7s and expansion of the existing Age Groups. Anyone wishing to join at any age should contact the club for more information (Sally Blee - 07714 732790 or Neil van den Dungen 07702 684245)
